Set in the 19th century, Kesari recounts the story of Havildar Ishar Singh who played a key role in the 1987 Battle of Saragarhi, a military combat between 21 Soldiers of the Sikhs Regiment of the British Army and 6000-10000 Afridi and Orakzai mountain tribesmen from Afghanistan in 1987.
